Ligand binding results in receptor autophosphorylation, and subsequent downstream signaling important in metabolic regulation, cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. Mutations in the insulin receptor gene have been linked to insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus and noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. |
