Description / MCAM

Melanoma Cell Adhesion Molecule (MCAM)/CD146 is a surface antigen on metastatic human melanoma cells originally called MUC18 or A32. The 113 kDa glycoprotein is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that shows significant homology to several cell adhesion molecules, notably N-CAM. MCAM/CD146 is also identical to the endothelial cell antigen S-Endo. In addition to melanoma and endothelial cells, MCAM/CD146 is expressed on smooth muscle cells, cerebellar cortex, trophoblasts and activated T cells. MCAM/CD146 is also expressed on a variety of malignant cell types including: vascular and smooth muscle tumors gliomas and neuroblastomas, prostate tumors, and in tumors arising from hematologic malignancies. As a proposed adhesion receptor, MCAM/CD146 may have an important role during tumor invasion and metastasis.
